Danish musicians Anne Mette Iversen and Vibe Normann will introduce children to English versions of some of these songs, play musical games, and perform some songs in modern, jazzy arrangements. In the duo Skáidi, jazz bassist Steinar Raknes and traditional joiker Inga Juuso tear jazz and joik from their respective traditions, creating a new, unrefined expression that transcends both mediums and results in a distinctive musical landscape where joik and bass share equal pride of place. Known for its enthralling style and high commitment to musicianship, the quartet will perform Franz Schubert’s Quartet in C minor, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s String Quartet in C Major and Carl Nielsen’s String Quartet in G minor.

Detective Inspector Irene Huss is the popular 2006-2007 crime series (produced by Illusion Film and YellowBird, the company who produced the film-adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy and the Wallander series screened by Scandinavia House) based on the best-selling crime fiction novels of Helene Tursten, featuring a new breed of crime fighter: DI Irene Huss, a woman in her late thirties who is dedicated to her job and her marriage. Mondays, pre-reception 7:30 pm/readings 8 pm October 18, December 6, 2010, January 31, 2011 & May 23, 2011 FREE Scandinavian American Theater Company (SATC), the first-ever Scandinavian-American theater company in New York, was founded in 2009 by a group of New York-based Scandinavian theater professionals with the wish to introduce a new generation of Scandinavian playwrights to an American audience. SATC’s mission is to present high-quality, cutting-edge productions of contemporary Scandinavian plays and fresh interpretations of Scandinavian classics, and to foster the Scandinavian-American performing arts community in New York. In their Contemporary Scandinavian Reading Series, SATC presents five plays annually representing Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Denmark. Filled with slapstick humor and a touch of seriousness, Blocks is a happy story about three characters trying to organize their world. Formed in 1979, Teater Tre began as mime-based, visual theatre that included text, movement and music and now is one of the most active and beloved theatre groups in Sweden.

Nordic Models + Common Ground The last decade and a half have witnessed a revitalization of Nordic design on a global scale. The great post-war masters are celebrated alongside fresh, exciting talent, proud of their roots and rich in design heritage. Inspired by the collaborative dynamic of the Nordic nations and its commitment to socially-responsible design, the show features an enterprising blend of emerging, youthful talent alongside established artists and designers, among them: Atelier Oslo, Norway; Daniel Rybakken, Norway; Louise Campbell, Denmark; JKMM Architects, Finland; Hans Johannsson, Iceland; and Lars Tunbjörk, Sweden, and explores how open artistic and cultural exchange facilitates innovation in art and design. Organized by Norsk Form and curated by Snøhetta, this extensive exhibition offers a visionary look at contemporary Nordic design in all its manifestations and articulates nascent trends as they impact the global design community. Nordic Models + Common Ground was made possible by support from William B. and Inger Gundersen Ginsberg; The Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation; the ASF Centennial Fund; the Royal Norwegian Consulate General in New York; and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Featured are a mix of young and emerging artists (including Peter Rosvik, Finland, and Søren Dahlgaard, Denmark), selected for their natural energy, ambition and inventiveness, alongside the experience and quality of internationally-established artists (among them Rita Marhaug, Marilyn Arsem, Johanna Householder, and Tanya Mars). This inter-generational blend of styles goes beyond mainstream contemporary art in an artistically high-profile, thought-provoking, and avant-garde milieu.

Duet for Cannibals/Duett för kannibaler Susan Sontag Foundation Translation Prize Seminar Friday, November 12, 8:30 pm $10 ($7 ASF Members) Directed by Susan Sontag (Sweden, 1969). In Sontag’s directorial debut a university professor and his wife hire a young man to help the professor arrange his papers for publication. The young man moves in with the couple, leaving his mistress to take the position. He soon discovers that things are not quite right with the dysfunctional duo. 105 min. Scandinavia House: The Nordic Center in America November 12, NY Susan Sontag Foundation Translation Prize Seminar. The 2010 Susan Sontag Prize for Translation was awarded to Benjamin Mier-Cruz, a Ph.D. candidate in Scandinavian Languages and Literature at UC Berkeley, for his proposed translation of selected letters and poems by the Finnish-Swedish author Elmer Diktonius (1896 – 1961). In celebration of the prize, programs will include panels on literary translation, and on Diktonius and Finland-Swedish literature, and a screening of the rare Sontag film, Duet for Cannibals/Duett för kannibaler (Sweden, 1969). Tuesday, November 16, 6:30 pm FREE From 1939 to 1945, Finland fought three wars: the Winter War, the Continuation War, and the Lapland War. Stina Katchadourian's memoir, The Lapp King's Daughter, describes how these wars uprooted the lives of one Finnish family. The book draws the author's childhood memories and on the correspondence between her parents. Co-presented in collaboration with the Finlandia Foundation.

Scandia New York is a group of people dedicated to learning and enjoying the "bygdedans" or regional couples dances of Norway and Sweden. They teach every week and have live music for both teaching and request dancing. They meet every Wednesday September-June. There is a "Scandinavian Dance Basics" class from 7 pm - 8 pm, and from 8 pm -10:30 pm gammaldans (pols, reinlander, shottis, hambo, etc), intermediate teaching, and bygdedans. The Norwegian dances include the Springars of Telemark, Valdres and Hallingdal, as well as Pols and Springleik. There are three people playing hardingfele as well as flat fiddle. All are welcome; you do not need to come with a partner. It is suggested that you wear low-heeled, hard-soled shoes. (Please note: because they rent a room in a synagogue, there are certain Wednesdays they do not meet, such as, this year, April 16 and 23 because of the Jewish Passover holiday, when the room is in use.)
